About the data
Every fact on the globe and in the lists comes from a named source, and every imported row keeps a link to it so it can be traced and refreshed. Listing details are researched from operators’ own websites, and every listing links to its operator. Shooting windows come from our own field research; each shows its confidence, when it was last verified and its sources.
Sources and credits
Each source is listed with the licence we use it under and the credit it asks for. On the globe, the ⓘ button in the corner shows short credits for the layers in view.

IUCN Red List of Threatened Species
The conservation status on species pages uses Red List categories, entered by hand. No IUCN data files are used: the range maps come from GBIF sightings.
Licence: IUCN Red List terms of use. Only the category name of each species is shown, with this credit. No IUCN data files or other Red List data are imported.

GBIF
Species names and keys (the GBIF Backbone Taxonomy), and sightings from the GBIF occurrence search, grouped into hexagons by month and drawn as each species’ range.
Licence: GBIF terms of use. Only sightings their publishers share under CC0 1.0 or CC BY 4.0 are used: both allow any use, including commercial, with credit. Sightings under CC BY-NC 4.0 are left out. The Backbone Taxonomy is CC BY 4.0.

Photos
We show a photo only when we hold a licence for it. Today that means photos reused from Wikimedia Commons under their authors’ licences, mostly Creative Commons. Each one carries its author, licence and a link to its file page wherever it appears, and a photo is not shown until that credit is known. Photos from operators’ own websites are not shown. The map pins are too small for text, so every credit is also listed on the photo credits page.
Reading the map

- National park or state reserveManaged by a government agency
- Private reserve or conservancyOwned by individuals, non profits or companies
- Community conservancyGoverned by indigenous peoples or local communities
- Shared governanceSeveral parties govern together
- Other protected areaGovernance not reported

Pins
The colour round a pin shows what it is. Stacks of several listings stay plain.
- Hides
- Lodges
- Tours
- Workshops
- Guides
Filled months mark open shooting windows; a dot marks peak weeks.
Inside or outside: every hide and lodge is tested against the park borders on import and carries a badge such as “Inside Oulanka National Park” or “Outside, 2 km from Oulanka National Park”.
Freshness
Listings and map data are loaded by hand when we update them, not on a fixed schedule. Listings show whether the owner has claimed them and when they were last checked. Operators charge in their own currency. The site shows prices in the currency you pick in the menu, converted at the European Central Bank’s daily reference rates and marked ≈, with the operator’s price beside it.
For developers and assistants
Listings, places and shooting windows are available as JSON: see the OpenAPI document and llms.txt. Protected-area borders are shown on the map only.
