Peak
Irruption-dependent and unpredictable. The 2026 boom was already past peak: one farmer's catch fell from ~150 mice/day in May to ~10/day by late July, and a raptor carer expects starving, displaced juveniles next.
Behaviour

Habitat
Dry season / dust
Crowds
Quiet
Also here
Carnaby's black cockatoo (endangered; same artificial hollows), Wheatbelt wildflowers (Aug–Sep).
Light
30.64°S. Computed for Moora: 21 Jun max 35.9°, day 10.2 h, 2.0 h under 10°, 3.6 h above 30°; 15 Jul max 37.8°. Winter sun is moderate, not low. Overcast frequency for the Wheatbelt winter NOT checked. More importantly, no source found shows these owls hunting in daylight during plagues — the published evidence is nest boxes, silos and night sightings, and an Australian researcher describes them as nocturnal hunters. Low — needs verification.
Weather risk
Rainy season
Tides and moon
Not applicable.
Atmosphere
Not established.
Permits
Not researched. Most of the observed boom is on private farmland and in artificial hollows installed for endangered Carnaby's cockatoos — nest-site photography there is both a disturbance issue and a private-land issue. DBCA told ABC it has no barn owl monitoring programme.
Getting there
Perth to Moora ~2 h drive, Geraldton ~4.5 h. Not costed.

Who runs trips here: None identified. Local contacts named in press: Carnaby's Crusaders (Dean Arthurell), Just Raptors (Janelle Ende).
