Check the Wine-throated Hummingbird windows for a combined Guatemala highlands itinerary.
Light
Lat ~15.2°N. Max solar altitude ~62° mid-Feb, ~72° mid-Mar, ~85° mid-Apr, overhead ~early May. Sunrise roughly 06:20 (Feb) to 05:45 (Apr) — approximate. CONAP gives peak bird activity 06:00–10:30 and 17:00–18:30. The forest is described as often fog-wrapped, but no cloud or fog frequency data found — unverified. Usable soft light: ~40 min at dawn and dusk plus fog/overcast spells; clear midday unusable. Access: Biotopo gate reported as 07:00–16:00 or 08:00–16:00 (sources disagree); CONAP states out-of-hours visits need prior authorisation. Ranchitos is on-site lodging, so dawn is available from its grounds without a gate.
Weather risk
Fog / mist (asset)
Atmosphere
Fog through moss-laden old-growth canopy; waterfalls and streams on the Biotopo trails; epiphyte-heavy limbs as perches.
Permits
Biotopo entry Q60 for foreigners (2025 report). Pre-dawn or after-hours entry needs prior authorisation from Biotopo management. One secondhand guide report says rangers installed artificial nest sites that then attracted egg-predating squirrels — unverified. No playback, telephoto only at any nest.
Getting there
Guatemala City → CA-9 to El Rancho (km ~85) → CA-14 north; ~3–4 h. ~1 h from Cobán. Route security NOT researched — check current advisories before booking. Ground-cost estimate excluding international flights.

Who runs trips here: Ranchitos del Quetzal (lodge, ~4 rooms, restaurant). Cayaya Birding — Knut Eisermann, a quetzal researcher (co-author of the subspecies morphometrics paper) running Guatemala birding tours and day trips.

Light
Lat ~10.3°N. Max solar altitude ~67° mid-Feb rising to overhead ~20 Apr. Cloud and mist frequency not found in sources — unverified. THE ACCESS PROBLEM: self-guided entry 07:00–15:00, guided birding tour 06:30, Monteverde reserve also opens 07:00. With sunrise ~05:30–06:05, the gate excludes most or all of the low-sun window. The only way around it found: the two rentable houses on the Curi-Cancha property.
Weather risk
Fog / mist (asset) and High wind
Atmosphere
Unverified for this site.
Permits
Curi-Cancha caps visitors (~50 reported) and recommends advance tickets; entry ~$20–25 (sources differ). Everyone converges on the same aguacatillo. No playback, no nest crowding.
Getting there
SJO → Monteverde ~3.5 h; unpaved approach to Curi-Cancha, high-clearance vehicle recommended. After breeding, Monteverde quetzals move to Pacific-slope forest (Jul–Oct) and then to the Atlantic slope — so do not shift this window later. Ground-cost estimate excluding international flights.

Who runs trips here: Curi-Cancha on-reserve houses (former Quaker owners' homes, bookable) for dawn access. Curi-Cancha 06:30 guided birding tour. Monteverde Travel for private naturalist guides.

Light
Lat ~8.8°N. Max solar altitude ~60° mid-Jan, ~69° mid-Feb, ~79° mid-Mar, overhead ~mid-Apr. Dry season is described as windier with clearer skies — the worst case for the soft-light constraint: high sun in reliably clear sky, usable light shrinks to ~40 min at each end of the day. Bajareque mist is the potential asset, but sources disagree on when it occurs (green season / year-round bursts / rolling in after ~10:00). Access: Finca Lérida's guided birding walk starts 08:00 — staying at the hotel is required to be in the forest at first light, and whether guests can enter the reserve at dawn is unverified.
Weather risk
High wind and Fog / mist (asset)
Atmosphere
Wind-driven bajareque drizzle backlit by low sun, if timing coincides.
Permits
Private estate: entry fee for non-guests. No playback.
Getting there
Boquete is ~20 min from Finca Lérida. January is Boquete's flower and coffee festival — town busy. Ground-cost estimate excluding international flights.

Who runs trips here: Finca Lérida hotel and its naturalist guides.

Horned Guan, Highland Guan, Azure-rumped Tanager, Wine-throated Hummingbird, Fulvous Owl; tapir recorded at the camp.
Light
Lat ~15.7°N. Max solar altitude ~72° mid-Mar, ~84° mid-Apr. Primary forest with trees reported to ~80 m: heavy canopy diffusion, dark understory, birds often high — the soft light is there, the brightness is not. No cloud/fog frequency data found.
Weather risk
Fog / mist (asset)
Atmosphere
Cathedral-scale moss and epiphyte forest; mist on the ridge at Cerro El Triunfo.
Permits
CONANP permit required and daily visitor limits enforced (Wikivoyage, entry M$215/day). Legacy Tours reports advance requests are no longer accepted — permits are granted at short notice at management's discretion. This makes the window unplannable as a fixed trip until the current process is confirmed.
Getting there
Multi-day hike in, camping at the reserve camp. Physically demanding. Cost is a rough estimate excluding international flights.

Who runs trips here: Legacy Tours (attempts permission for custom parties). Ecobiósfera (Tuxtla Gutiérrez) was historically the authorised operator for multi-day treks — current status unverified.

Weather risk
Fog / mist (asset) and Rainy season
Atmosphere
Continuous drizzle and cloud — the whole day is atmosphere.
Permits
As Feb–May: Biotopo out-of-hours entry needs prior authorisation.
Getting there
