Peak
February to mid-March is the Ladakh peak. It coincides with the mating season — wild snow leopards mate between January and mid-March, and courtship movement makes cats more active and more visible. Late January through March is the practical window.
Days needed
12 days
Behaviour
Courtship / display, Hunting / predation, Migration / passage
Coat
Full winter coat
Habitat
Fresh snow, Tundra
Crowds
Moderate
Also here
Blue sheep (bharal), Siberian ibex, Ladakh urial, Tibetan wolf, red fox, golden eagle, lammergeier, woolly hare, Royle's pika. Hanle on the Chang Tang for Tibetan snowcock and sandgrouse.
Light
SOFT-LIGHT ASSESSMENT: awkward, and worth being clear-eyed about. Ladakh in winter is a high-altitude cold desert with famously clear, crisp air — which is excellent for visibility across a valley and bad for soft light. At 34°N in February the midday sun is high enough and the sky clear enough to be genuinely harsh, and there is little reliable cloud to fall back on. Deep valley shadow is the practical soft-light source, along with fresh snowfall. This partly resolves itself because snow leopards are crepuscular and are most active at dawn and dusk anyway — but that stacks the hardest exposure conditions on top of a 400 m working distance and a 600mm lens. Expect high ISO on a distant subject in low light; that is the defining technical problem of this window.
Weather risk
Snow / blizzard (asset) and High wind
Atmosphere
Spindrift off ridgelines, and the austere near-monochrome palette of Ladakh in winter — which is the whole compositional argument for this subject.
Permits
Hemis National Park permits; Inner Line Permits for some eastern Ladakh areas including Hanle. Verify current requirements and whether they have changed since the Ladakh administrative reorganisation.
Getting there
Fly Delhi to Leh. Acclimatisation days in Leh are mandatory — Ulley sits at roughly 4,000 m. Ulley offers heated lodge accommodation and vehicle-accessible viewpoints with minimal trekking; Hemis is homestay or tented camp with real trekking and mule-supported access from Zingchen. Nights to -20°C, and mid-December to late January can reach -30°C in the valleys; daytime highs hover around freezing. Cold destroys battery life — carry many, kept warm.

Who runs trips here: Snow Leopard Lodge (Ulley) is the established base. Wild Images run Hemis and Ulley itineraries extending to Hanle. Several operators quote around 90% success — that figure comes from operator marketing and should be treated as unverified until corroborated independently.
