- Peak
- Mid August to late September. Parks Canada's own guide states the most favourable travel conditions are August to October, after the thick late June to early August fog and before the worst of hurricane season.
- Days needed
- 5 days
- Coat
- Summer coat
- Habitat
- Sand / desert, Wetland / water
- Crowds
- Permit-limited / quota
- Also here
- World's largest grey seal breeding colony (pupping is Dec to Feb, outside the visitor season, so expect hauled out animals not pups). Ipswich sparrow, which breeds almost nowhere else. Shipwreck remains and dune form abstracts.
- Light
- 43.9°N. Max solar altitude about 46° in mid September falling to roughly 38° by mid October, so midday is workable here in a way it never is in June (69°). The real soft light source is maritime cloud and fog: the island records 127 days a year with at least one hour of fog, and it is the windiest place in Nova Scotia, so overcast frequently runs all day. September trades the guaranteed fog of July for a landing that actually happens. Expect several stops less light than the sand suggests; overcast plus a long lens will push ISO.
- Weather risk
- Fog / mist (asset), High wind and Cyclone / storm season
- Tides and moon
- Low tide widens the hard beach for walking the shoreline, but tide state does not drive the horses. Not a planning constraint.
- Atmosphere
- Sea fog rolling over the dune line and erasing the horizon. Blown sand streaming off dune crests in wind. Rim light through manes and tails into low sun. Horses reduced to silhouettes on a dune ridge with fog behind.
- Permits
- Entry is prohibited without Parks Canada approval. All visitors must travel with a Parks Canada licensed operator or hold written authorization. Mandatory 20 m exclusion distance from the horses; Parks Canada states filming permits will not be granted in future if it is breached. Drones strictly limited. Day use fee CAD 37 per person. A film and photography permit or business licence may be required for commercial work, with locations agreed in advance. No camping. Only about 806 visitors in 2022/23.
- Getting there
- Base Halifax. Day trips require you to hold the following day free as a weather window. Exploration is on foot only, 6 to 8 hours walking soft sand and dunes. No cell service, guides carry VHF. Overnight visitor accommodation is essentially unavailable, so the multi day sailing trip is the only realistic way to get repeat sessions in different light. A single day trip is a lottery on conditions.
Who runs trips here: Kattuk Expeditions: fixed wing and helicopter day trips, max group 6, 8 to 10 hours ashore, CAD 3,150 + HST for 2026, flying Sable Aviation's BN-2 Islander from Halifax (1.5 hrs each way). Sable Ocean Adventures: Monday to Friday live aboard sailing trips, CAD 5,750 + HST, 6 to 8 hours ashore per day, up to 4 guests; Sep 14 to 18 2026 still had seats when checked. Adventure Canada runs expedition ship calls.

- Peak
- After the first settled snow, typically January. Needs verification against actual snow records.
- Days needed
- 6 days
- Coat
- Full winter coat
- Habitat
- Fresh snow
- Crowds
- Quiet
- Also here
- Cincar and the Dinaric karst as pure landscape. Livno karst fields and sinkholes in snow. Wintering raptors reported but unverified.
- Light
- 43.85°N at 1,150 to 1,350 m. Max solar altitude about 23° at the solstice and under 30° through early February, so the sun never climbs and effectively the whole short day is soft. Dinaric winter cloud and valley fog are frequent and the plateau often sits at or near cloud base. Realistically 6 to 8 usable hours a day rather than two 40 minute windows, which is the single best argument for this location over every warmer one in the set. Cost: heavy overcast plus snow plus a 600 mm equivalent will be a shutter speed fight.
- Weather risk
- Snow / blizzard (asset), Fog / mist (asset) and High wind
- Atmosphere
- Breath vapour at minus 10. Falling snow. Snow covered karst gives a near white, near empty background, which is exactly what the cluttered summer plateau cannot give. Low sun rim lighting long winter manes.
- Permits
- No permit identified for photographing on the plateau; access is by open gravel road. Unverified: land status, whether individual horses are still legally owned by the families that released them, and current drone rules in BiH. Check before relying on any of it. Horses come down to lick road salt in winter, which concentrates them but puts tarmac and traffic in frame.
- Getting there
- Fly Split (about 2 hrs drive) or Sarajevo. High clearance vehicle essential: karst sinkholes and broken rock make the plateau slow on foot and worse by car after rain. No facilities up there, carry water and fuel. Snow can close the upper tracks, which is simultaneously the risk and the picture. Accommodation in Livno town is cheap and plentiful.
Who runs trips here: Luka Esenko, Slovenian photographer, has shot this herd across winter and spring and works with Mario, a local forester who monitors the horses; his published field reports are the most useful photography specific source found. Livno based jeep safari operators run dawn and dusk departures aimed at photographers.

- Peak
- Cold clear winter mornings. Horses drink roughly every 2 to 3 days, so plan several consecutive dawns rather than one.
- Days needed
- 5 days
- Coat
- Full winter coat
- Habitat
- Sand / desert, Dry season / dust
- Crowds
- Quiet
- Also here
- Gemsbok, springbok and ostrich on the Garub plains. Kolmanskop ghost town near Luderitz (separate permit) for a different body of work entirely.
- Light
- 26.6°S. Max solar altitude about 40° at the June solstice, against about 87° in December, so winter is not a marginal improvement here, it is a different location. Useful light runs roughly the first and last 2 to 3 hours and midday is merely flat rather than destructive. Cloud is rare. Coastal Namib fog pushes inland at times but Garub is roughly 100 km from the coast, so do not plan around it. Aus records the coldest winters in Namibia, which is what makes the breath vapour work.
- Weather risk
- High wind and Heat haze (kills long lens)
- Atmosphere
- Breath vapour on cold winter mornings. Backlit dust as bands come in to drink. Layered inselberg and hills behind the plain give depth without clutter.
- Permits
- The shelter at Garub is public and free, reached by a corrugated gravel track off the B4. Namib-Naukluft park rules apply and no approach on foot beyond the shelter. Drone use in Namibian national parks requires permission; verify. Ethics: the waterhole is an artificial borehole, originally maintained for steam trains, and the Namibia Wild Horses Foundation has had permission to supplementary feed the population since 2017. This is a provisioned, actively managed population and it has to be disclosed.
- Getting there
- Windhoek to Keetmanshoop to Aus is roughly 8 hrs driving, or fly to Luderitz. Self drive, 4x4 preferred. Easy to combine with Kolmanskop and the Sperrgebiet coast.
Who runs trips here: Klein-Aus Vista (Gondwana Collection), 25 km away, acts as informal guardian of the herd and is the nearest accommodation that gets you to the hide before sunrise. Namibia Wild Horses Foundation, Telane Greyling, is the research authority on this population and the right person to ask about current numbers and condition.

- Peak
- Cold mornings after a clear night, when river mist forms. Not date driven.
- Days needed
- 5 days
- Coat
- Full winter coat
- Habitat
- Wetland / water, Sand / desert
- Crowds
- Crowded — vehicles in frame
- Also here
- Bald eagle along the lower Salt, great blue heron, desert bighorn around Saguaro Lake.
- Light
- 33.5°N. Max solar altitude about 33° at the winter solstice, against about 80° in June. The first and last 2 to 3 hours are genuinely soft and midday is flat rather than brutal. Arizona winter cloud is intermittent but when it comes it reflects colour off the river surface, which is the difference between a good frame and a great one here.
- Weather risk
- High wind
- Atmosphere
- River mist on cold mornings. Backlit spray when a horse lifts its head out of the water. Saguaro and the Superstition Mountains as a background layer.
- Permits
- Tonto Daily Pass or America the Beautiful pass required to park at every Bush Highway recreation site. Salt River Wild Horse Management Group asks for a minimum 50 ft (about 15 m) distance and no feeding. The herd is protected under the Salt River Horse Act after the 2015 removal proposal was withdrawn.
- Getting there
- 45 minutes from Phoenix, which is both the convenience and the problem. Kayakers and paddleboarders are on the river through the day. Finding a band takes local knowledge because they range widely; the river access points are the reliable draw.
Who runs trips here: No operator needed, self drive from Phoenix. Richard Simonsen and Leslie Leathers are the recognised local shooters of this herd and their field advice (horses most active within 2 to 3 hours of sunrise and sunset, looking for water) is the best available.

- Habitat
- Autumn colour, Sand / desert
- Crowds
- Permit-limited / quota
- Also here
- White tailed eagle, pelicans and the delta's wetland bird list. Letea forest and dune form abstracts. Sfantu Gheorghe coast.
- Light
- 45.3°N. Max solar altitude about 30° at the start of November falling to roughly 25° by month end, low all day. Delta autumn brings frequent radiation fog and low cloud off the water, and canopy diffusion inside the forest itself adds a second soft light source that works even on a clear day. Good odds of all day shooting, which is the main case for this window over the April to September tourist season.
- Weather risk
- Fog / mist (asset) and High wind
- Atmosphere
- Delta fog drifting through knotted oak and Periploca creeper. Low sun raking white sand dunes. Black and bay coats against pale sand is a strong tonal separation with no white markings to blow out.
- Permits
- Letea is a strictly protected reserve inside the Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage site and Romania's oldest nature reserve (protected 1930, reserve 1938). Access to the forest is only when accompanied by an agent of the Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve Administration. Verify current permit terms, fees and drone rules directly with DDBRA. The horses are unregulated and considered a grazing threat to protected flora, so management policy could change.
- Getting there
- Bucharest to Tulcea about 4.5 hrs, then boat to Sulina or Letea. The open question is autumn and winter boat frequency and guide availability, since almost all advertised delta tourism is April to September. Confirm before committing.
Who runs trips here: No photography specific operator identified, which is a gap. Local guesthouse guides in Letea and C.A. Rosetti, and DDBRA accredited guides, are the route in. Rolandia and similar Bucharest operators run delta safaris but advertise April to September.

- Behaviour
- Calving / pupping
- Coat
- Juveniles present
- Habitat
- Sand / desert, Wetland / water
- Crowds
- Permit-limited / quota
- Also here
- Grey seals hauled out. Ipswich sparrow in breeding season. Fog and dune abstracts, which are the fallback that makes a fogged in day still worth it.
- Light
- 43.9°N. Max solar altitude about 69° at midsummer, the worst sun angle of the year here, but largely irrelevant because fog dominates: the Sable station reports fog in roughly 200 of the 720 to 744 hours in June and July, and it can sit for a week at a time. When the fog is in, the entire day is shootable and the light is as good as it gets anywhere in this research. When it lifts, midday is unusable.
- Weather risk
- Fog / mist (asset) and High wind
- Tides and moon
- Not a driver.
- Atmosphere
- Thick sea fog at ground level. Wet coats. Mist sitting over the freshwater ponds at first light.
- Permits
- Same as the September window: Parks Canada approval mandatory, licensed operator or written authorization, 20 m exclusion distance, drone limits, CAD 37 day use. Foaling season means extra restraint around mares with young foals, and the 20 m rule matters more, not less.
- Getting there
- The problem is landing, not finding. Parks Canada's visitor guide states fog is often thick from late June to early August and can impede air access. Build in cancellation days and do not book a single day charter in this window.
Who runs trips here: As September. Sable Ocean Adventures sailing weeks are the better bet here because they absorb a lost day.
