Peak
No seasonal peak established for caracal here. Eastern Cape is a year-round, all-season rainfall region; May to September is cooler, drier and gives shorter grass and better visibility, which is the only seasonal argument I would make.

Light
~33°S, so the solar geometry matches the Cape (max ~33° in June, ~79° in December), but the light regime is not the point of this window and that is the problem. The proposition here is night drives with a spotlight. Spotlight is not soft light — it is hard, directional, single-source artificial light that produces the characteristic flat-eyed, black-background night-drive frame. Eastern Cape inland gets far less of the Cape Peninsula's frontal overcast. The one advantage: private reserves are not gate-bound, so guides can be out before sunrise and after sunset and stay out. If a caracal appears in the last 20 minutes of daylight you are permitted to be there, which is more than TMNP allows in summer. Day sightings do happen here — the recorded Shamwari sighting was a daylight encounter at a kill — but they are flukes, not a plan.
Weather risk
High wind
Tides and moon
Moon phase governs whether an ambient-light night frame is even conceivable. Full moon plus a cooperative animal is the only route to a night image that is not a spotlight shot. Very low odds.
Atmosphere
Limited. Coastal Eastern Cape gets morning mist inland of the Kariega and Bushmans river valleys; worth asking the reserve how often.
Permits
Private reserve — access is via a booked stay, guided vehicles only, no self-drive, no off-vehicle. Night drives with spotlights are permitted on private reserves (they are not in national parks), which is precisely why this window exists and also why its output is competition-limited. Africa Geographic Photographer of the Year will not consider images where spotlighting was used directly onto the face or into the eyes of wildlife, and requires flash to be declared. WPY requires that artificial lighting not distress or blind the subject. A cat's eyes held in a spotlight beam is exactly the practice these rules target.
Getting there
Fly into Port Elizabeth (Gqeberha) via Johannesburg or Cape Town, ~1.5 hours to Kariega. Easy, low-altitude, comfortable. No self-catering, no 4x4. 300 f/2.8 is the right lens — night drive work at f/2.8 and very high ISO is the whole game, and a 600 f/4 is too slow and too long from a moving open vehicle at night. Cost figure converted from the published £6,995 including flights.

Who runs trips here: Wildlife Worldwide 'Rare Mammals of the Eastern Cape' — 8 nights at Kariega with photographer Neil Aldridge, 11 days from £6,995 including flights. Aldridge reports caracal on every visit to Kariega, including a prolonged sighting long enough to switch to video. That is the strongest repeat-sighting claim for this location. The trip is built around caracal, aardvark and porcupine, with night drives and guided walks.
