Also here
Large lion prides, African wild dog, leopard, ~12,000 elephant, greater and lesser kudu (Ruaha is one of few places holding both), 580+ bird species, and baobab landscapes as standalone work.
Light
7.70°S. Computed mid-June: sunrise 06:51, sunset 18:31, noon solar altitude 59.0°, sunrise→+6° = 30 min. Mid-July noon 60.8°. Then it climbs hard: mid-Aug 68.3°, mid-Sep 79.3°, mid-Oct 89.2° — effectively vertical. So June–July has the lowest midday sun of the dry season by nearly 30 degrees over October, and October has the animals. That is the trade in one line. October is also the hottest month and the worst for heat haze at 300 mm+.
Weather risk
Extreme heat and Heat haze (kills long lens)
Atmosphere
Late-dry-season dust on the Great Ruaha, and October's pre-rain storm build. Cold June mornings in the hills for possible low mist — not verified.
Permits
Ruaha offers game drives, WALKING SAFARIS, NIGHT DRIVES and fly-camping — unusual for a Tanzanian national park and worth confirming which camps hold those permissions, because night drives in particular would extend the evening window past a gate. NOT VERIFIED THIS PASS: TANAPA off-road driving policy (assume prohibited in the national park), park gate hours, and Tanzanian drone regulations. Verify all three before booking.
Getting there
Daily flights Dar es Salaam → Msembe airstrip, roughly US$380 pp each way, with Coastal Aviation and Safari Airlink. 6–8 nights. Ruaha is a standalone trip, not an add-on to the northern circuit.

Who runs trips here: 14 camps and lodges park-wide, ranging rustic to luxury. No photography-specific operator or hide identified for Ruaha in this pass — if the walking and night-drive permissions are real, a private vehicle with a guide who knows the baobab groves is the right build. Balloon safaris run July–October.
