Peak
October 1 to about October 15. NPS says foliage peak generally comes mid October, but northern chipmunks can go below ground from mid October (southern Quebec median last sighting Oct 20; Adirondack sources say late October or early November). The overlap of colour and active chipmunks is the first half of October; later than that you are gambling on the animal.

Habitat
Autumn colour
Crowds
Moderate
Also here
Red squirrel (NPS: common). Peregrine falcon at Jordan Cliffs and Cadillac (seasonal closures apply). Harbor seals from shore; whale watching boats from Bar Harbor.
Light
44.35°N: maximum solar altitude about 41° on Oct 1 and 38° on Oct 10, daylight about 11 to 11.4 h, sun below 15° for about 88 minutes each end (computed). Bar Harbor is overcast or mostly cloudy 41% of the time at the start of October rising to 47% by the end (WeatherSpark), so close to every other day gives all day soft light. Spruce shade gives open shade even on clear days. Coastal fog is common in spring and summer; October fog frequency not found. Activity peaks mid morning and mid afternoon, so the usable light is overcast day light, not dawn. Access: park roads and trails open, no timed entry needed for these areas (the Cadillac summit road reservation system was not checked and is irrelevant for this subject).
Weather risk
Fog / mist (asset)
Atmosphere
Sea fog drifting through spruce behind the subject; wet granite that turns pink to rose after rain; lichen that reads almost silver under overcast. Fog frequency in October is unverified.
Permits
NPS entrance fee. Feeding wildlife is prohibited (listed fine $50 for feeding, disturbing or molesting wildlife). Drones prohibited. Leaving trails can be restricted by the superintendent. No regulated approach distance for small mammals found; a 25 yard figure appears only in a non NPS blog and is not verified.
Getting there
Stay in Bar Harbor or Southwest Harbor; Blackwoods and Seawall campgrounds are in the park. Bangor is the nearest larger airport (about 45 miles to the nearest medical centre per the park guide). October is increasingly busy; weekdays and Schoodic reduce people in frame.

Who runs trips here: None needed. Self guided.
