- Peak
- None — this row exists to rule the summer out. The park itself is a genuinely good and underrated bison location; the SEASON is the problem. Go in late autumn, winter or very early spring instead, when the sun is low and the heat has gone.
- Behaviour
- Rut
- Coat
- Summer coat
- Habitat
- Dry season / dust, Sand / desert
- Crowds
- Quiet
- Also here
- Pronghorn, mule deer, aoudad in the canyons, roadrunners, Texas horned lizards, and the enormous Mexican free-tailed bat emergence at Clarity Tunnel on the Trailway — which is itself a strong summer subject and the one genuine reason to be here in the hot months, though it is a bat photograph, not a bison one.
- Light
- THE DISQUALIFYING FACT. Caprock is at ~34.4°N — the lowest latitude of any window in this subject — and the maximum solar altitude on 21 June is 79.0°. The sun is effectively overhead. It climbs fast off the horizon and drops fast, so golden hour is short at both ends, and the Texas panhandle in summer is predominantly clear, so there is no all-day overcast to fall back on. This is the exact case the soft-light constraint was written to exclude: high sun, reliably clear sky, low latitude. Usable light collapses to roughly 45–60 minutes twice a day, and heat haze eats into even that.
- Weather risk
- Extreme heat, Heat haze (kills long lens) and Wildfire smoke
- Atmosphere
- In theory: red dust and rut activity. In practice the dust is lit from almost directly overhead, which is the worst possible angle for it, and the shimmer off baked red ground destroys resolution at 400mm+ well before the middle of the morning.
- Permits
- Texas Parks and Wildlife entry fee; the bison roam free across the park and visitors are warned to keep well back. Not verified: current TPWD approach-distance guidance, drone policy, or commercial photography permit requirements — check before any trip in a better season.
- Getting there
- Fly Amarillo (AMA) or Lubbock (LBB), ~1.5–2 hours drive. Quitaque is the nearest town and is very small. Park camping available. Access is easy and cheap — which is exactly why the summer trip is tempting and should still be declined.

Light through the year
Golden hour is when the sun is low, between the horizon and 6° above it: soft, warm light. Times are for the 15th of each month, in Chicago time (with summer time where it applies).
