Light
43.6°N. Max solar altitude 45° on Sep 25, 40° on Oct 10 (computed); sun under 15° only about 3 h a day in total. Jackson has clear or partly cloudy skies 69% of the time in Sep and 59% in Oct (WeatherSpark), so overcast is only 31 to 41%. Usable soft light: about 3 to 4 h a day on clear days (roughly 90 min after sunrise, 90 min before sunset), all day on the minority of overcast days. Midday is written off on clear days. Inference, not verified: the Tetons to the west put the western valley in shade early in the evening, so evening work is better on the east side (Gros Ventre). Roads open to vehicles until Nov 1.
Weather risk
Wildfire smoke and Fog / mist (asset)
Atmosphere
Morning river fog and frost on the Gros Ventre, breath vapour, backlit mist with the sun rising over the Gros Ventre Range.
Permits
Entrance fee. Minimum 25 yards from moose; rangers recommend 100 yards from bulls during the rut and have cited photographers, including with plain clothes patrols (2014 release). Harassing or altering behaviour is prohibited at any distance. Drones prohibited. Teton Park Road and Moose Wilson Road close to vehicles Nov 1.
Getting there
Jackson Hole Airport (JAC) sits inside the park; Idaho Falls (IDA) about 2 h. Rental car. Lodging in Jackson or Kelly; Jackson prices are high in September (Fall Arts Festival mid Sep). Gros Ventre Campground closing date not checked.

Who runs trips here: Self drive. No photography specific operator verified this session.
