- Peak
- Mid to late April for peak low elevation ephemeral bloom (trillium, spring beauty, phlox). Wildflower Pilgrimage runs the last week of April and brings guided groups to the same trails; the week before is quieter.
- Days needed
- 5 days
- Behaviour
- Courtship / display
- Coat
- Moulting / patchy
- Habitat
- Green season / lush
- Crowds
- Moderate
- Also here
- Black bears in spring; wild turkey in Cades Cove; the park is a salamander hotspot (30 plus species); migrating warblers.
- Light
- 35.7°N mid April: maximum solar altitude about 64°, daylight about 12.9 h, sun below 15° for about 75 minutes each end (computed). This is the hardest light of the four good windows: the canopy is still leafless or just leafing, so on clear days there is little diffusion and branch shadows fall across the forest floor. Soft light depends on overcast, which runs about 47% of the time in April (WeatherSpark, Gatlinburg and park). On clear days use the first two hours after the animals are up and the last two before sunset in valley shade, write off roughly 10:30 to 16:00. Rain on about a third of April days (secondary source). Access: parking is first come first served with a tag; nothing restricts early or late presence on these trails as far as checked.
- Weather risk
- Fog / mist (asset) and Rainy season
- Atmosphere
- Valley mist after rain, the thing the Smokies are named for; wet trillium petals glowing under overcast. Frequency in April not quantified.
- Permits
- Parking tag required for any stop over 15 minutes: $5 day, $15 week, $40 year, printed and displayed, tied to the licence plate. Feeding wildlife prohibited. Approaching a bear within 50 yards is illegal (relevant on these trails in spring). Stay on trail: walking into wildflower beds damages them. Drones prohibited in NPS units (standard NPS rule, not rechecked for this park).
- Getting there
- Fly Knoxville (McGhee Tyson). Base in Gatlinburg (Greenbrier and Chimneys are close) or Townsend. Printed parking tag before arrival.
Who runs trips here: None needed. Great Smoky Mountains Association runs the Spring Wildflower Pilgrimage (register mid February) if you want botanical guidance, but it is not a photography product.

- Peak
- Third week of October to first week of November for low and mid elevation colour (NPS: mid October to early November below 4,000 ft).
- Days needed
- 4 days
- Habitat
- Autumn colour
- Crowds
- Crowded — vehicles in frame
- Also here
- Elk in Cataloochee (autumn rut, general knowledge, not rechecked); black bears feeding heavily before denning; white tailed deer; wild turkey.
- Light
- 35.6°N late October: maximum solar altitude about 41°, daylight about 10.7 h, sun below 15° for about 80 minutes each end (computed). The problem: early autumn is the clearest time of year here (a secondary source citing WeatherSpark gives Sept 21 as the clearest day of the year) and October overcast frequency was not found. Expect more clear days than in April. Soft light comes from valley fog mornings, forest shade and the lower sun; the real opportunity on clear days is backlight at the forest edge in the last hour. Access: Cades Cove loop traffic can take about four hours to circle, which can cost you the light; walk in rather than drive the loop.
- Weather risk
- Fog / mist (asset)
- Atmosphere
- Backlit leaf litter and rim light on the fur late afternoon; valley fog on cold mornings.
- Permits
- Parking tag required ($5 day, $15 week, $40 year). Feeding wildlife prohibited; illegal feeding has made red squirrels tame on Alum Cave Trail per a local source, so assume any unusually tame animal near picnic areas has been fed. Bear 50 yard rule.
- Getting there
- Knoxville. Townsend is the quieter gateway for Cades Cove; Gatlinburg has the worst October congestion. Book lodging early: NPS says October is the busiest month of the year.
Who runs trips here: None needed.
