Light
SOFT-LIGHT ASSESSMENT: strong. At 59–60°N in June the sun stays low even at solar noon, days are extremely long, and the Alaskan coast is frequently overcast and foggy — three independent sources of soft light stacked on top of each other. Practically the entire day is usable, which removes any tension with floatplane schedules and tide timing. Coastal fog burning off the sedge flats is the atmospheric asset. This is one of the few windows where you can shoot all day and still meet the constraint.
Weather risk
Fog / mist (asset), High wind and Rainy season
Tides and moon
Tide state governs clam-digging behaviour on the flats — low tide concentrates bears on open sand. Worth building the daily schedule around the tide table rather than the clock.
Atmosphere
Coastal fog burning off the sedge flats, low tide reflections on wet sand, backlit rim light on wet fur.
Permits
NPS regulations; guided access is the norm and mandatory in some areas. Bear-viewing operators work to strict approach protocols. Verify current Katmai coast permit position.
Getting there
Floatplane or wheeled charter from Homer or Anchorage; typically 1–1.5 hours. Day trips give roughly 3–5 hours on the ground; lodge-based stays are far better for light. Multi-day camping options exist on the Katmai coast out of Kodiak.

Who runs trips here: Emerald Air Service and Smokey Bay out of Homer for day trips. Backcountry Journeys run multi-day Katmai coast camping (June–August). Lodge-based options at Silver Salmon Creek. Needs verification: which operators permit genuinely low-angle prone work.
