Weather risk
Snow / blizzard (asset) and Fog / mist (asset)
Atmosphere
Ice fog and hoar frost in the Lamar Valley at dawn; steam from thermal features as a background element.
Permits
NPS wildlife distance rules apply (generally 25 yards for most wildlife, 100 yards for bears and wolves). Roadside stopping restrictions. Verify current winter regulations.
Getting there
Only the Mammoth–Cooke City road stays open to cars in winter; everything else requires snowcoach or snowmobile. Base in Gardiner or Silver Gate. Self-drive workable.
