• Hyacinth Macaw at Refugio Ecologico Caiman, Estância Caiman, Miranda sub region, Mato Grosso do Sul. A 53,000 ha working cattle fazenda with an adjoining private reserve, four separate lodges, and the field base of Instituto Arara Azul since 1998. This is the only window on the list with something the Transpantaneira cannot offer: structured access to monitored nests. Instituto Arara Azul runs a half day or full day Hyacinth Macaw Project observation tour for Caiman guests, which puts you with the biologists at natural manduvi cavities and at the artificial wooden nest boxes the project has been installing since 1992. More than 15 farms in the region are monitored from this base and 112 nests were monitored in the Caiman area in the 2024 to 2025 breeding season. Also on the property: a bocaiuval, a dense stand of Acrocomia aculeata that the Institute names as a refuge for the birds. Feeding in a palm stand with no lodge provisioning involved.

  Peak: Late September into October. You are aiming for the part of the breeding cycle when chicks are large enough to be at the cavity mouth rather than the laying and incubation weeks, which give you an empty hole. The exact weeks shift with flood year versus dry year (see the northern Pantanal green season window), so confirm the state of the current season with the Institute when booking the tour. November pushes into pre wet heat and the worst haze.
