Peak
Late June to early August. Northern Botswana whelping is tied to the cold dry months of June, July and August; den occupied 10 to 12 weeks after birth.
Days needed
7 days
Behaviour
Denning / emergence, Hunting / predation
Coat
Juveniles present
Habitat
Dry season / dust, Wetland / water
Crowds
Moderate
Also here
Outstanding leopard in the riverine forest (off-road makes it), large lion prides on the floodplain, elephant at the river crossings, hippo, and excellent night-drive species (genet, civet, porcupine, honey badger) that Moremi legally cannot offer.
Light
19.2S. June gives the best light of any location in this file outside South Africa: max solar altitude only 47.5 degrees, golden hour 0.94 hr/day across both ends (28 minutes per end), sub-20-degree light 3.25 hr/day. Zero cloud in the dry season. Riverine forest along the Khwai gives canopy diffusion; the open floodplain gives none. Cold dawns (single-figure C is common in June and July) mean no heat haze and excellent long-lens conditions in the early window.
Atmosphere
Heavy floodplain mist and frost-cold dawns in June and July, breath vapour on dogs and on prey, and dust off the mopane once the floodplain dries. The Khwai riverine forest at first light is the single best soft-light location in the concession.
Permits
This is the whole point of Khwai: because it is a community concession rather than a national park, OFF-ROAD DRIVING AND NIGHT DRIVES ARE PERMITTED, both of which Moremi bans outright. Walking is available through lodges. NG19 is open to self-drivers and mobile operators, so it is also the cheapest legitimate route to off-road wild dog work in Botswana. NG18 is exclusive to its lodges. Drones banned. WPY 4(3) den rule applies: telephoto only, and get that agreed in writing.
Getting there
Fly Maun to Khwai airstrip (~25 min) or drive in from Maun (3 to 4 hr, 4x4 essential). Charter baggage limits around 20 kg soft-sided are the classic trip-wrecker; solve the glass question before booking. Mid-range camps roughly USD 600 to 1,000 pppn; NG18 lodges considerably more. Self-drive or mobile camping brings this down dramatically and is genuinely viable here.

Who runs trips here: Machaba Camp (Machaba Safaris, well positioned on the Khwai River), Sable Alley and the Natural Selection camps in NG18, Sango Safari Camp and Khwai Tented Camp at the more affordable end, plus numerous mobile operators using Magotho. Botswana Predator Conservation Trust / Wild Entrust (popecol.org) work this landscape and are the source for denning behaviour.

Behaviour

Coat
Juveniles present
Habitat
Dry season / dust
Crowds
Moderate
Also here
Mana's standing elephants reaching albida pods (Boswell's successors), very large buffalo herds, lion, leopard, hippo and crocodile on the Zambezi, roan and sable in the Nyamatusi sector, exceptional birding. Canoeing gives a water-level platform available almost nowhere else.
Light
15.75S. Max solar altitude 51 to 60 degrees, the lowest of the year in June. Golden hour totals 0.86 to 0.92 hr/day across BOTH ends: 26 to 28 minutes per end. Sun below 20 degrees totals 2.9 to 3.1 hr/day. Near-zero cloud, ~10 sunshine hours, no rain, so there is no overcast fallback and the middle of the day is written off. Effectively ~50 minutes of shootable light per day. Cool season (days 28C, nights 14C) keeps ground temperatures down, so heat haze is not yet destroying long-lens work the way it does in Sep and Oct.
Atmosphere
River mist off the Zambezi and breath vapour on 14C dawns. Backlit dust raised by elephant and buffalo moving through the forest. Albida canopy diffusion is the only genuine soft-light source in the park and the nearest thing to cloud you will get: use it deliberately rather than treating it as dappled-light noise.
Permits
ZimParks entry fees plus camp booking. Mana is the only major African park where experienced visitors may walk unguided in dangerous-game areas; most people use guided walks and should. Drones effectively unavailable without a specific ZimParks permit. No fixed approach distance in law, so the guide's protocol is the constraint. WPY rule 4(3): wide-angle photography at a den is ineligible, telephoto is permitted. Get a written telephoto-only, non-consecutive-day den protocol from the operator before booking.
Getting there
Fly Harare (~1.5 hr) or Victoria Falls (~2 hr) to Mana Main airstrip, then road transfer. Self-drive is 6 to 8 hr from Harare via Chirundu and needs a 4x4. Minimum practical stay 6 nights in-park. 2026 high season rates: Kanga ~USD 930 pppn, Mana River ~872, Nyamatusi 1,160 to 1,390. A 7-night two-camp ABC package was USD 7,113 pp in high season 2026. Walking is physically demanding in the heat and you carry your own glass.

Who runs trips here: African Bush Camps (Kanga Camp, Zambezi Expeditions, Nyamatusi Camp) run Nick Dyer's annual 'Walking with Wild Dogs' photographic safari, capped at six guests. Machaba Safaris (Mana River Camp). Wilderness (Ruckomechi). Painted Dog Conservation (Peter Blinston) and Bushlife Conservancy for current pack intelligence; contact them before booking, not after.

Habitat

Crowds

Also here
Enormous dry-season elephant concentrations on the Linyanti waterfront, lion, leopard, roan and sable, and the Selinda spillway birdlife. Kwando's night drives produce the small nocturnal carnivores.
Light
~18.5S. July golden hour 0.93 hr/day across both ends, falling to 0.85 by October as the sun climbs to 79 degrees. Sub-20-degree light 3.2 hr/day in July, 2.8 in October. Zero cloud. October adds serious heat and heat haze; July and August do not. The practical read is that July and August are the light window and September and October are the behaviour window.
Weather risk
Extreme heat and Heat haze (kills long lens)
Atmosphere
Dust from the Linyanti elephant concentrations, which in the dry season rival Chobe's numbers but with a fraction of the vehicles. Riverfront backlight at the water's edge in the last 30 minutes.
Permits
Private concessions: off-road driving, night drives and guided walks all permitted, strict vehicle limits per sighting, no self-drive or mobile access. Drones banned. Den protocol is at the operator's discretion, so get it in writing.
Getting there
Fly Maun or Kasane to the concession airstrips, ~30 to 45 min. Pairs naturally with an Okavango camp (30 minute hop) or with Chobe and Victoria Falls. Budget USD 1,000 to 1,800 pppn all-inclusive with off-road, night drives and walking included. Charter baggage limit ~20 kg soft-sided.

Who runs trips here: Kwando Safaris (Lagoon Camp and Lebala Camp, both with long-standing wild dog reputations and active tracking), Great Plains (Selinda Camp, Selinda Explorers), Wilderness (Savuti, Duma Tau). Kwando's model of actively tracking packs rather than waiting for them is the relevant difference for this subject.

Crowds
Quiet
Also here
Lion unusually relaxed around vehicles because they see so few, leopard in the riverine forest, thousands of hippo and crocodile on the Rufiji, sable and roan in the miombo, 440-plus bird species, and the boat platform for everything at the water's edge.
Light
7.9S, the most equatorial location in this file and the worst light for it. June golden hour 0.88 hr/day across both ends (26 minutes per end), sub-20-degree light 2.99 hr/day, and the sun reaches 58.8 degrees even at the June solstice. By September and October it is nearly overhead (79 to 90 degrees), golden hour drops to 0.81 hr/day, the shortest in the whole file. Negligible cloud in the dry season. The latitude penalty is real: you lose roughly 8% of your soft light against Khwai and 16% against Sabi Sand, which on a 25 minute window is 2 to 4 minutes per end.
Weather risk
Extreme heat and Heat haze (kills long lens)
Atmosphere
River mist off the Rufiji and its lakes at dawn. Miombo canopy diffusion where packs den in woodland rather than open ground. Dust from the receding lake margins in August.
Permits
National park rules: no off-road driving in principle, though enforcement and practice vary by sector and operator, so ASK SPECIFICALLY. Walking safaris and fly-camping are permitted and are a genuine differentiator. Boat safaris on the Rufiji are unique in Tanzania and give a low water-level platform. Drones banned in Tanzanian national parks. Most camps close mid-March to late May for the long rains.
Getting there
Fly-in only in practice. Daily scheduled flights from Dar es Salaam (45 to 60 min) or Zanzibar (60 min) to Mtemere, Matambwe or Siwandu airstrips, USD 400 to 550 return. Road from Dar is 6 to 7 hr and rough. Camps roughly USD 600 to 1,200 pppn. Combines naturally with Ruaha or with a Zanzibar leg. You will rarely see another vehicle, which is the reserve's real asset.

Who runs trips here: Sand Rivers Selous (Nomad), Roho ya Selous and Siwandu (Asilia), Beho Beho, Lake Manze, Rufiji River Camp. Asilia and Nomad are the two with serious photographic guiding. Ask any camp directly what happened with dogs in each of the last three denning seasons, because den location relative to camp is everything here.

Peak-concentration elephant and buffalo at the pools, the standing elephants, lion on the floodplain, carmine bee-eater colonies, and the best canoeing conditions of the year.
Light
15.75S. Max solar altitude climbs from 71 degrees in September to 82.5 in October, the sun gets high fast, and golden hour SHORTENS to 0.83 to 0.84 hr/day total, about 25 minutes per end, the shortest of the Mana year. Sub-20-degree light 2.79 hr/day. Zero cloud. The compensation is not light quality but atmosphere: dust load is at its annual maximum and the low sun through it is the picture.
Weather risk
Extreme heat and Heat haze (kills long lens)
Atmosphere
This is the dust window. Heavy backlit dust from elephant and buffalo herds moving to water in the last hour of light, plus the albida cathedral effect at its most pronounced once the canopy has thinned. Storm light from the first building clouds in very late October.
Permits
As for the June to August window. Additional practical constraint: 35 to 40C afternoons mean afternoon drives start later and the productive evening window is even shorter.
Getting there
As for June to August. Note most seasonal riverfront camps start closing from the end of October and the access road becomes unreliable once the rains break in November.

Who runs trips here: Same camps as the June to August window. African Bush Camps high season runs 1 Jun to 31 Oct, so pricing is identical to mid-winter with worse conditions.

Days needed

Behaviour
Hunting / predation, Denning / emergence

Habitat
Dry season / dust, Wetland / water
Crowds
Moderate
Also here
One of Africa's densest leopard populations (8.5 per 100 km2 measured in the southern sector, Rosenblatt et al. 2016), Thornicroft's giraffe and Cookson's wildebeest as endemics, the Nsefu carmine bee-eater colony (Sep), enormous hippo pods, and the Shenton hides for elephant and carmine work.
Light
13.1S. September golden hour 0.82 hr/day across both ends (~25 min per end), October 0.83; sub-20-degree light 2.75 hr/day. Max solar altitude 73.6 degrees in September and 85.1 in October, so the sun climbs fast and midday is dead. Zero cloud. October daytime highs regularly exceed 40C, which is why Luangwa camps call it 'suicide month': heat haze will destroy 600 mm work from mid morning. The one genuine compensation here is that ZAMBIA PERMITS NIGHT DRIVING WITH SPOTLIGHTS IN THE NATIONAL PARK, which extends the working day at both ends more than anywhere else in this file.
Weather risk
Extreme heat and Heat haze (kills long lens)
Atmosphere
Heavy dust off the Luangwa riverbed in October, backlit at low sun. Ebony grove canopy diffusion in the Nsefu sector, the Luangwa equivalent of Mana's albida. Smoke haze from seasonal burning can add atmosphere or ruin a day; it is not predictable.
Permits
Night drives with spotlights are legal in South Luangwa, unusual for a national park, and are the reason to come here over Botswana's national parks. Off-road driving is NOT generally permitted in the park itself; whether GMA and private land around Nkwali and Chinzombo allow it is the single most photographically consequential unanswered question in Zambia and should be asked in writing. Walking safaris are the park's founding speciality (Norman Carr) and are excellent, though not usually aimed at dogs. Drones banned. Proflight Lusaka to Mfuwe baggage limit is 20 kg TOTAL including hand luggage and cameras: solve this before choosing glass.
Getting there
Fly Lusaka to Mfuwe (~1 hr, Proflight) then 30 to 90 min road transfer depending on camp. Direct international into Mfuwe seasonally from Johannesburg. Camps roughly USD 500 to 1,500 pppn. Minimum practical 6 nights. October heat is genuinely punishing and shortens every activity.

Who runs trips here: Time and Tide (Chinzombo, Kakuli, Mchenja), Robin Pope Safaris (Nkwali, Tena Tena, Nsefu), Shenton Safaris (Kaingo and Mwamba, the hide specialists), Bushcamp Company (Mfuwe Lodge). Zambia Carnivore Programme is the research source and monitored 26 denning packs and over 400 dogs nationally in 2023, including the Puku Plain pack which had its first litter that year.

Also here
Xakanaxa is one of the best general game areas in Botswana: leopard, lion, elephant, red lechwe, sitatunga at the lagoon edges, and outstanding water birding. Boat-based work is available year-round here, which the dry concessions cannot offer.
Light
19.2S, identical to Khwai: June golden hour 0.94 hr/day across both ends, sub-20-degree light 3.25 hr/day, max solar altitude 47.5 degrees, zero cloud. THE LIGHT IS GOOD AND THE ACCESS RULES STOP YOU USING IT: gate times govern, and being on a fixed road network at dawn means you may be 20 minutes of driving away from the pack when the only 28 minutes of the day begin.
Atmosphere
Floodplain mist at Xakanaxa and along the Khwai, same asset as the concession window next door.
Permits
NO OFF-ROAD DRIVING AND NO NIGHT DRIVES ANYWHERE IN MOREMI. This is the defining constraint and it is a legal one, not an operator preference. Walking is also not available except at a few private-area camps. Park gate hours restrict how early you can be in position. A den 60 m off the road is a den you photograph at 600 mm through scrub, or not at all. Private areas inside the reserve (Mombo, Xigera) are the exception and are priced accordingly.
Getting there
Fly Maun to Xakanaxa or Khwai airstrip, or drive from Maun (4x4, 4 to 5 hr). In-park camps are cheaper than concession camps, roughly USD 500 to 900 pppn, precisely because they offer fewer activities. June high flood years can cut road access in parts of the Delta: check the flood level for your dates.

Who runs trips here: Camp Moremi, Camp Xakanaxa, Okuti inside the reserve. Khwai River Lodge sits just outside and has access to a small private concession where it runs night drives, which is the usual workaround. Self-drive and mobile camping is entirely practical here and much cheaper.

Very large relocated elephant population (the reserve's whole identity), lion, leopard, buffalo swimming the Zambezi, 350-plus bird species, canoeing and boating.

Effectively identical to Mana Pools, ~15.9S. Golden hour 0.83 to 0.92 hr/day across both ends, sub-20-degree light 2.8 to 3.1 hr/day, zero cloud in the dry season. Riverine forest canopy provides the same diffusion asset as the Mana albida.
Weather risk
Extreme heat and Heat haze (kills long lens)
Atmosphere
Thick riverine forest on the Zambezi edge: canopy-filtered light, river mist, and dust from the reserve's very large relocated elephant population.
Permits
Private reserve, so off-road driving, night drives and guided walking are all available, which is the single biggest operational advantage over Mana Pools NP. Exclusive traversing, so no vehicle competition at a sighting. DISCLOSURE ISSUE, NOT A PERMIT ISSUE: this pack was captured from a livestock-conflict situation, held in a boma, and released in Q3 2025 under Project Rewild. Animals are very likely collared. Establish collar status and release date in writing before shooting anything you intend to enter or sell.
Getting there
Fly into the Sapi or Mana airstrips from Harare or Victoria Falls. Combined traversing across Sapi plus Mana is over 337,000 ha. Great Plains is at the top end of the market: budget USD 1,800 to 2,500 pppn, materially more than Mana Pools camps.

Who runs trips here: Great Plains Conservation, Tembo Plains Camp (Relais & Chateaux, the only one in Zimbabwe) and the two-bedroom Zanji Suite. Great Plains Foundation for the Project Rewild monitoring data and pack whereabouts. Dereck Joubert states their guests fly around Africa specifically for wild dogs, so the guiding is tuned to this subject.

There are none that can be published. Laikipia denning is reported NOT to track the rains: cycles run roughly every 11 months and therefore drift about one calendar month earlier each year. Light
0.3N, on the equator, which is the worst possible latitude for this working method. Golden hour 0.80 to 0.87 hr/day across BOTH ends, the shortest in this file, around 24 minutes per end in March and September. Sub-20-degree light 2.67 to 2.91 hr/day. Day length is fixed at 12 hours all year and the sun climbs to 87 degrees at the equinoxes. Laikipia's altitude (roughly 1,700 to 1,800 m) does bring bimodal rains in April to May and October to November with real cloud, which is the only structural soft-light advantage anywhere in this file, and the only reason this window is not simply written off. Cloud percentages NOT sourced.
Atmosphere
Highland mist and low cloud during the two rainy seasons, Mount Kenya as a background element, and dust from cattle movement on ranch land. The subspecies angle: these are East African dogs, reported darker and higher contrast than southern animals, which is a genuinely different-looking subject if the difference holds.
Permits
Private conservancy and ranch land, so off-road driving, night drives and walking are all generally available by agreement with the landowner, which is the strongest access position in this file. No national park gate hours. Conservancy fees and guide arrangements are per property. Drone rules per conservancy and under Kenyan CAA, treat as unavailable.
Getting there
Fly Nairobi Wilson to Nanyuki or a conservancy airstrip, 45 to 60 min, Safarilink or Air Kenya. Wilson baggage limit ~15 kg in a soft bag, the tightest in this file and a serious constraint on a 600 f/4. Camps roughly USD 400 to 900 pppn. Easily combined with Samburu or the Mara.

Who runs trips here: Laikipia Wilderness Camp has the strongest wild dog reputation in the county. Loisaba, Ol Malo, Sosian. Light
Genuinely the best in this file, which is what makes the row worth writing. At 24.8S (Madikwe, Kruger lowveld) June golden hour is 0.99 hr/day across both ends and sub-20-degree light 3.47 hr/day; at Tswalu (27.2S) June gives 1.02 and 3.60, the longest soft window of any location researched. Green season (Nov to Mar) adds real cloud. On light alone this would be a Prime row.
Atmosphere
Tswalu's red Kalahari dunes are the cleanest, most graphic background available for this species anywhere. Highveld winter frost and breath vapour at Madikwe. Green season storm light in the lowveld.
Permits
Off-road driving, night drives and low vehicles are all standard on private South African reserves, and sightings are often managed to two vehicles. Access is excellent. THE RESTRICTION IS NOT LEGAL, IT IS PROVENANCE.
Getting there
The easiest and cheapest access in this file. Madikwe is a 4 hr drive or short flight from Johannesburg, malaria-free, USD 400 to 900 pppn. Tswalu is a private charter from Johannesburg and very expensive. No charter baggage problem, so you can bring the 600 f/4.

Who runs trips here: Not listed deliberately. If you decide to shoot here anyway, the operator question is not who has the best vehicles but whether the pack is collared, when it was formed, where its founders came from, and when it was last translocated. Endangered Wildlife Trust (Carnivore Conservation Programme) and the Wild Dog Advisory Group hold those records.

Not applicable. Nothing is accessible.
Light
Best cloud cover of the Mana year and therefore, on paper, the best soft light: max solar altitude 84 to 87 degrees is irrelevant if the sky is overcast, and the wet season is the only time this park has an overcast fallback at all. THAT IS THE FRUSTRATION OF THIS ROW. The light argument is real and the access argument defeats it.
Weather risk
Rainy season and Fog / mist (asset)
Atmosphere
Storm structure, dramatic skies, lush green, newborn ungulates, and genuine all-day soft light under cloud. All of it unreachable.
Permits
Most camps close from November or December through March. The access road floods and is frequently impassable. Parts of the park are closed to vehicles for the wet season. ZimParks road conditions must be confirmed before any departure and are not reliable in this period.
Getting there
Not viable. Charter landings unreliable, road access flooded, camps shut.

Who runs trips here: Effectively none operating. African Bush Camps' rate cards run mid season Apr to May and Nov only, high season Jun to Oct; Kanga Camp lists closures Jan to Mar. That pricing structure IS the evidence.
