- Peak
- June–July at Chief's Island; the flood front moves downstream, so Xakanaxa and Khwai peak later, roughly July–August. Peak booking pressure — June–July requires 9–12 months' advance booking.

- Wild dog pups emerging from dens in June — moremi.com calls these the most sought-after sightings, and Khwai is among Africa's most reliable dog areas. Flooded-delta aerials by helicopter from Mombo (30/45/60 min, extra). Mokoro low-angle work on antelope in water. Chitabe cheetah 75%. Linyanti/Selinda lion 94%. The August barbel run (catfish feeding frenzy) with peak crocodile and stork activity, just after this window. Khwai night-drive specials: serval, honey badger, genet, civet, aardwolf. Botswana has essentially NIL captive-predator risk — Blood Lions' survey of unethical captive facilities in Africa does not mention Botswana at all.
- Light
- THE BEST SUN GEOMETRY OF ANY WINDOW IN THIS DATABASE. At 19.25°S the max solar altitude bottoms out at 47.4° in June and 49.2° in July — against 88–90° in November–January at the same place, and against Seronera's BEST month of 64°. That means genuinely workable directional light well past 09:00 and from 15:00, a materially longer usable window than anywhere else on this list. Golden hour 28 min; soft window ~96–97 min per end, ~3.19–3.25 hr/day, second only to Sabi Sand in June. THE CATCH IS ABSOLUTE: sunshine 10–10.5 hr/day and ZERO MILLIMETRES OF RAIN for four consecutive months (Jun–Sep) means a blank blue sky every single day. There is no cloud rescue and no sky worth including — plan compositions that exclude sky or treat it as clean negative space. Coldest nights of the year: minima 8.7–9.2°C, and Climates to Travel notes it can freeze on winter nights even in the north-west, so breath vapour is realistic. ⚠️ Cloud-cover % is UNPUBLISHED for Maun — the 10.5 sunshine hours is the proxy.
- Weather risk
- Fog / mist (asset) and High wind
- Atmosphere
- ⚠️ HYPOTHESIS, NOT A FINDING: 8.7°C dawn minima over 7,000+ km² of standing water at flood peak is the strongest candidate for radiation fog and steam-off-water anywhere in this dossier. No source quantifies it. Test it with the camp before building the trip around it. Breath vapour on the coldest mornings is a safer bet. Dust becomes significant from September, not yet in June–July.
- Permits
- 🔴 MAJOR RULE CHANGE, 2026: NIGHT DRIVES ARE NOW PERMITTED AT MOMBO, INSIDE MOREMI — the first time in the camp's 35-year history. The Ngami Times (Botswana national paper, 24 Aug 2026) reports 'Recent policy changes by Moremi Game Reserve lifted longstanding restrictions that had prohibited driving after dark on Chief's Island'; Expert Africa's Little Mombo page dates the addition to June 2026. ⚠️ TWO UNRESOLVED PROBLEMS: (1) the two sources disagree on the date, likely soft launch vs press release; (2) it is UNVERIFIED whether this applies only to Wilderness's private traversing area or to Moremi generally — Wilderness's own Moremi page STILL says 'National park rules do not permit night driving,' an unresolved contradiction on their own site. DO NOT ASSUME Xakanaxa or self-drive Moremi now permits night driving. Confirm with Wilderness reservations before booking on this basis. OFF-ROAD: Moremi generally prohibits it, but Wilderness states the Mombo private traversing area permits 'off-road access for intimate sightings' — also worth confirming, since it appears on the same page that denies night driving. Khwai NG18 and NG19 and all private concessions (Chitabe, Kwando, Linyanti, Selinda, Vumbura) permit BOTH off-road and night drives outright. Moremi gates 06:00–18:30 Apr–Sep. Wilderness enforces a THREE-VEHICLE limit portfolio-wide and uses INFRARED COVERS on night-drive spotlights so predators are not dazzled — ask specifically whether IR filtration is standard on the new Mombo night vehicles. Moremi entry P270/person/day non-resident. DRONES: legal in Botswana in theory and impossible in practice — CAAB registration, P4,025 tourist fee, importation permit, POLICE CLEARANCE WITH FINGERPRINTS, intelligence-service vetting form, and a physical inspection in Gaborone or Maun; and prohibited over national parks and wildlife refuges regardless.
- Getting there
- Fly-in by light aircraft from Maun — Mack Air, Delta Air, Major Blue Air, Wilderness Air. Inter-camp charter legs $300 to over $700 pp per leg; road transfers $100–400. ⚠️ Baggage: the standard Delta rule is ~20 kg in a SOFT-SIDED bag on single-engine Cessnas but this could NOT be confirmed from a primary source — confirm with your air operator before packing long lenses. Structure: 10 nights minimum, 3–4 nights per camp across three camps, because charter legs eat half a day each and you need three consecutive full days for a guide to work a known individual's territory. Two nights anywhere is a transit stop.
Who runs trips here: Mombo is the scarce asset: 45,000 ha traversing for 18 guests — roughly ONE GUEST PER 2,500 HECTARES — which makes the 3-vehicle cap essentially unreachable and turns this into effective private-sighting photography. That is what $5,043 pppn buys. Wilderness states some Mombo leopards are 'completely habituated,' and the provenance is honest: the Jouberts filmed Legadema there from June 2003 to 2006 working 04:00–21:00 daily at ~50 yards, deliberately avoiding interference. Chitabe: Wilderness's own photographic guide quotes resident photographer Dave Hamman — 'no fewer than 50 leopards have been recorded' — the most concrete leopard-abundance claim from any Botswana operator; 100% traveller leopard success. ⚠️ NO LEOPARD HIDE EXISTS IN BOTSWANA. Every hide (Pula Pan at Hyena Pan, Pan 51 at Little Sable, King's Pool underground, Matebole at Mashatu) is a WATERHOLE HIDE OPTIMISED FOR ELEPHANT. Hides are a backup-subject asset here, not a leopard asset. Wilderness advertises no dedicated low-slung photographic vehicle; the mokoro is their stated low-angle tool. Pangolin's four-seat vehicles are the closest thing to a purpose-built photo vehicle in the country — but note Pangolin's own dedicated LEOPARD product is South Luangwa, not Botswana, which tells you what they think.

- Also here
- Xakanaxa is one of the best general game areas in Botswana: leopard, lion, elephant, red lechwe, sitatunga at the lagoon edges, and outstanding water birding. Boat-based work is available year-round here, which the dry concessions cannot offer.
- Light
- 19.2S, identical to Khwai: June golden hour 0.94 hr/day across both ends, sub-20-degree light 3.25 hr/day, max solar altitude 47.5 degrees, zero cloud. THE LIGHT IS GOOD AND THE ACCESS RULES STOP YOU USING IT: gate times govern, and being on a fixed road network at dawn means you may be 20 minutes of driving away from the pack when the only 28 minutes of the day begin.
- Atmosphere
- Floodplain mist at Xakanaxa and along the Khwai, same asset as the concession window next door.
- Permits
- NO OFF-ROAD DRIVING AND NO NIGHT DRIVES ANYWHERE IN MOREMI. This is the defining constraint and it is a legal one, not an operator preference. Walking is also not available except at a few private-area camps. Park gate hours restrict how early you can be in position. A den 60 m off the road is a den you photograph at 600 mm through scrub, or not at all. Private areas inside the reserve (Mombo, Xigera) are the exception and are priced accordingly.
- Getting there
- Fly Maun to Xakanaxa or Khwai airstrip, or drive from Maun (4x4, 4 to 5 hr). In-park camps are cheaper than concession camps, roughly USD 500 to 900 pppn, precisely because they offer fewer activities. June high flood years can cut road access in parts of the Delta: check the flood level for your dates.
Who runs trips here: Camp Moremi, Camp Xakanaxa, Okuti inside the reserve. Khwai River Lodge sits just outside and has access to a small private concession where it runs night drives, which is the usual workaround. Self-drive and mobile camping is entirely practical here and much cheaper.
