Fruiting season, variously reported by local operators as June–October and August–December. The disagreement is itself the finding — one Ketambe-based source states seasons there are no longer clearly defined or predictable and orangutans are findable year-round, with deeper forest penetration required outside fruiting.

Also here
Thomas's leaf monkey, white-handed and siamang gibbon, hornbills including helmeted hornbill, pig-tailed macaque, Rafflesia arnoldii in bloom.
Light
SOFT-LIGHT ASSESSMENT: better than the latitude alone predicts, for one reason — closed canopy and near-constant cloud. At 3°N the sun climbs fast and golden hour is around 20 minutes, so on the open river the window is tiny. But under primary rainforest canopy the direct sun is diffused all day, and Ketambe sits in a valley microclimate with frequent cloud and rain. The light problem here is not harshness, it is dynamic range: soft shade below, blown sky above, subject usually silhouetted against it. Overcast days are genuinely the best days here because they compress that range. The exposure cost is heavy — plan for high ISO throughout.
Weather risk
Rainy season, Extreme heat and Fog / mist (asset)
Atmosphere
Canopy haze and shafts of light through gaps are the whole game here. Morning river mist at Ketambe.
Permits
Gunung Leuser trekking permits and mandatory guides. Critically Endangered species — disease transmission risk from humans is real; mask discipline and distance are not optional.
Getting there
Fly to Medan (or Kualanamu), then long road transfer into Aceh. Ketambe is remote and rustic. Trekking is steep with river crossings. Rubber boots, trekking poles and a poncho are standard. Leeches are common; mosquitoes less so at altitude.

Who runs trips here: Locally-run Ketambe trekking operators. Needs verification: which guides are genuinely oriented toward photography rather than general trekking, and realistic sighting rate per day.

Light
Around 5°N. Equatorial — short golden hour, fast transitions, closed canopy. Elevated walkways give the one chance at level or downward angles.
Weather risk
Rainy season, Extreme heat and Fog / mist (asset)
Atmosphere
Dawn mist sitting in the valley below the canopy walkway is the signature Danum image, orangutan or not.
Permits
Danum Valley is a conservation area with controlled access. Verify current permit and guide requirements.
Getting there
Fly to Lahad Datu via Kota Kinabalu, then road transfer. Borneo Rainforest Lodge is the comfortable option; the research centre is cheaper and more basic. Kinabatangan is boat-based, more reliable for sightings, but the habitat is a degraded riparian corridor and it shows in backgrounds.

Who runs trips here: Borneo Rainforest Lodge; Danum Valley Field Centre. Canopy walkway access is the thing to confirm.
